Question by regmor12: what is best center dialog speaker with Marantz 4001 and NEAR A6 speakers?

Best answer:

Answer by XenonAudio
The best would be to get a single A6 for the

center channel. This would be voice-matched

perfectly and it will give a seemless soundstage.

Well….

Over the years, Marantz has been the good amp for Bass/Midrange and has a good “reserve” of power……

Yamaha has been designed more for High Frequency response.

So…..what do you like in YOUR sound? More BASS or More Hi Frequency??

I like both…..

HOWEVER……The Yamaha has more power. 120W compared to the 90W in the Marantz….(conservative, remember the word “headroom”)

Does it matter? Only if you have a STADIUM-sized room.

Cost – Marantz wins there.
Features — Both Win there.

Now I know what you’re up against…..
So….this is what we do.
You purchase the Yamaha…..UNLESS you want a 0 TOY that you can’t afford to get BECAUSE YOU GOT THE YAMAHA!!

Like the Toshiba HD-DVD for 0 (HDA2)
You get what I mean by this?

Aw hell….Heads Yamaha, Tails Marantz
Believe me, this will DECIDE better than the two of us…..

And I’ll bet you’ll keep flipping that coin until “the one you REALLY want” Wins!

That’s how I make my decisions when it’s really really tight……

What is the best way to record audio for a voice over when you’re not in a studio?

31 May

Question by Arch Nerd: What is the best way to record audio for a voice over when you’re not in a studio?
I need to record some voice over (non-singing/music, so no desire for ambient sound), but I’ll be traveling and visiting the voice talent in different locations. What would be the best way to record audio but with portable equipment?
1) Buy a portable field recorder (like a Marantz PMD660) to record and then transfer to my laptop
or
2) Buy a high-quality microphone, stand, pop screen, and then just plug it directly into my laptop when I record

Or, is there an even better way than either of these?

For your purposes, a laptop with a suitable mic should work just fine. An added advantage is the ability to email the resulting file.

We need something for recording band practice. What’s the best digital field recorder $150 or less?

26 May

Question by amishphysicist: We need something for recording band practice. What’s the best digital field recorder 0 or less?
I’m looking for a digital field recorder for my band and would like something that records directly to mp3. Things like the PMD620 and the PCM-D1 are way out of my range. We’re looking for something that can give us a pretty good stereo mix without blowing up like a voice memo recorder probably would.

Price is just as important as quality here, so we’re willing to settle for something with a little less fidelity if it would mean a better price. Ideally we’d be getting a stereo recording that doesn’t distort or clip in a live-band-volume situation.

Thus far, the H2 Handy Stereo Field Recorder seems like the closest answer for us, but the price is still a bit high for what we’re looking for.
Just to clarify: I’m looking for the actual recording device, not software to record with. An actual battery-powered unit with mics, flash memory and usb output.
