Well….

Over the years, Marantz has been the good amp for Bass/Midrange and has a good “reserve” of power……

Yamaha has been designed more for High Frequency response.

So…..what do you like in YOUR sound? More BASS or More Hi Frequency??

I like both…..

HOWEVER……The Yamaha has more power. 120W compared to the 90W in the Marantz….(conservative, remember the word “headroom”)

Does it matter? Only if you have a STADIUM-sized room.

Cost – Marantz wins there.
Features — Both Win there.

Now I know what you’re up against…..
So….this is what we do.
You purchase the Yamaha…..UNLESS you want a 0 TOY that you can’t afford to get BECAUSE YOU GOT THE YAMAHA!!

Like the Toshiba HD-DVD for 0 (HDA2)
You get what I mean by this?

Aw hell….Heads Yamaha, Tails Marantz
Believe me, this will DECIDE better than the two of us…..

And I’ll bet you’ll keep flipping that coin until “the one you REALLY want” Wins!

That’s how I make my decisions when it’s really really tight……

Marantz SR4002 – AV receiver – 7.1 channel – black

Marantz SR4002 – AV receiver – 7.1 channel – black

  • 80 Watts x 7 Channels All Discrete Amplifier Stages
  • HDMI (V1.3) Switching: 3-In / 1-Out
  • Multi-channel (7.1) LPCM via HDMI capability
  • M.R.A.C. Auto Calibration
  • S-Video to Component Video Up-Conversion

OK, so you know the benefits of HDMI. That’s the high definition audio/video (or “multi-media”) interface that lets you connect a DVD player, for example, to a processor or receiver with just one cable. And then use just one more cable to get all that information to your TV screen. Think you’d like that convenience? And how about switching so you can select one or the other HDMI-equipped source without the hassle of changing multiple cables? The SR4002 has it. Not quite that far on the leading e

Q&A: Question about the “peak” light on my marantz receiver?

23 Aug

Question by lenny: Question about the “peak” light on my marantz receiver?
Temporarily, I have two little weak speakers hooked up to my Marantz sr5400 receiver along with a bigger subwoofer. Whenever I turn it up to a regular listening level, the “peak” light comes up on the receiver. Any ideas why?

Peak usually means you shouldn’t drive your speakers at any higher volume or you will get distortion.

If the impedance of the speakers is smaller than ordinarily used which is probably 16 or 8 ohms there may be a phenomenen very much like a short circuit if the speakers are ohly 4 ohm or less.

Impedance matching is important in the use of speakers, especially if you are driving them at higher volume.

You can add more speakers and put them in a series so that you have 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/8 and you will be matching to 8 ohms.

If you want 16 ohm match, just put four of those 4 ohm speakers in a series.

If you have 16 ohm speakers and want a match to 8 ohms for maximum efficiency the formula is 1/16 + 1/16 = 1/8 and you would have an 8 ohm match if you connect the speakers in parallel, rather than series.

If you don’t have more speakers you can use a high wattage resistor in series with the smaller impedance speakers to get a better match.

Similarly you can use a high wattage resistor to connect in parallel if you are
working in that direction.

The resistors are available at a radio supply store such as http://www.allelectronics.com or radio shack.

For Many Years I owned Marantz equipment. Back in the 70′s and 80′s they were excellent. I would think from the history that they are still pretty good.

Harmon Kardon, and some ot the more expensive equipment gives you a little more definition. However it depends on what you are looking for.

Marantz 18 Eighteen Scope Receiver Acoustic Research AR-TA Turntable

This is my studio audio set up. Apologies for the crappy footage, done with a digital pic camera. Hope you enjoy my vintage set up of a Marantz Eighteen Receiver with an Acoustic Research AR-TA turntable and Lowe Opta LO 55 speakers (which are amazing speakers I might add – Vintage Klipsch fans would love them). The room this video was filmed in is very small.
